Each year before the program starts we send our fellows a short list of readings. Since all incoming fellows have varying levels of exposure to health, entrepreneurship, and design, we use this list as a way for everyone to level up. We encourage you to add these books to your library as well!
This is the only book I have come across that clearly explains the US Health Care System, it's stakeholders, and policies. Nathan and Elisabeth have put together a primer that should be required reading for anyone working in health. I keep this one on my desk as a reference and they provide a great list of further readings on their site.
Never heard of design thinking? Took a few design thinking classes? Experienced designer looking to brush up? Everyone can find value in this IDEO publication. Again, this is one I keep on my desk and consult in whenever I start a new project. Also, check out IDEO.org for more educational materials.
With over 100,000 copies sold, this book is the best way to get caught up on the entrepreneurial lingo. After reading this you will know about minimal viable products, pivots, and split testing. The book has spurred a movement that includes local meet-ups, thousands of startups, and now a second book in the making.
Cheating Destiny is written by someone with a lifetime of experience living with Diabetes and who is now is parenting a child with type 1. It showcases the burden that diabetes causes on individual patients and outlines the history of the disease. Our clinical partner, Dr. Michelle Magee recommends it for anyone who is living with the disease, or knows someone who is. The ADA Guide is a straightforward, patient-centered guide that provides you a 411 on living with diabetes, which I am sure our fellows will be using during their two week simulation.
We have a growing list of resources (podcasts, websites, listserves) that we will be sharing on the blog. So, stay tuned! In the meantime, what other books do we think we should add to our pre-read or program reading list? Let us know in the comments below!
