Before continuing to read the blog post below, take minute to attempt to connect all of the dots on the grid below by drawing no more than four lines. Don't cheat. Ready? Go.
Tough, right? Some of you may have seen this puzzle before, but for those of you who haven’t, it can seem impossible. Just when you think you’ve got it, you realize you've missed something. If and when you finally get it? So satisfying.
Now think about it like this—what if those dots were the pieces of a challenge you’re facing, a problem you want to solve, or an ecosystem you want to shift? The prospect of connecting all of those dots seems daunting, but, by thinking outside of the box and drawing outside the lines, incredible things can happen.
For MedStar Health, MI2 is that set of lines that connects all of the dots in surprising and innovative ways. It is that countervailing force. And as evidenced by the MI2 Forum, it is certainly a force to be reckoned with.
Beyond a space and time to review research and discuss best practices, the MI2 Forum was an opportunity for the MedStar community to share deeper stories, to ask bigger questions, and to step courageously toward innovation. In one moment, we challenged our own “possibility blindness” with Associate Director of MI2, Dr. Ed Tori; in the next, we acknowledged creative desperation, connection, and contradiction as avenues toward insight with cognitive psychologist Dr. Gary Klein. Later, Dr. Raj Ratwani discussed medical errors as we watched his preschooler giggle her way through tongue twisters. And in the forum’s keynote address, graphic artist and cancer survivor Chris Ayers, asked us, “In what ways are you dancing today?”
While I have to admit that, as a lifelong dancer, my heartstrings are uniquely pulled by questions like Chris's, it is a question which also speaks to the incredible creative theory and values that keep the MI2 flame burning in forums like this and beyond. As the Fellows learned during this gathering and as we'll continue discovering in our year together, finding and taking time to discuss, to read, to share, to create, and yes, to dance is paramount in the journey toward innovation.
