1 district. 5,000+ miles. The 2014 Health for America Fellowship has officially begun.
During the first week of our Fellowship experience, we met cardiologists, nurses, and patients; attended thought-provoking conferences; and had the opportunity to see firsthand how hospitals and clinics are working to improve the lives of those living and dying with heart failure.
But who are we, and what exactly do we do?
Let’s start with the basics:
Our cohort, the 2014-15 Fellows, will be focusing on heart failure.
What is heart failure?
Heart failure is when the heart cannot pump enough blood and oxygen to support other organs in your body.
What is heart failure’s impact?
5.1 million people in the United States are living with HF, and it is estimated to cost the US $32 billion, in health care costs and lost productivity, annually.
Our cohort will build a solution utilizing both design thinking and lean start-up techniques.
What is design thinking?
The design thinking approach brings together what is desirable form a human point of view with what is technologically feasible and economically viable. Definition of design thinking from IDEO. Read an explanation of design thinking from HFA Fellow Ellen Kourakos.
What is lean startup?
Lean startup is a method for developing businesses and products. It focuses on on getting products into customers' hands quickly. By testing products with customers early,
the team can make course corrections quickly and accelerate growth.
Our cohort will work out of Start It Up’s Delaware’s coworking space, The coIN Loft. The coIN Loft fosters a community of creatives, developers, entrepreneurs, and freelancers from the nation’s first state in the heart of Wilmington, DE. When we aren’t traveling or at The coIN Loft, we will be at Christiana Care, working alongside providers and patients to improve care delivery.
Thank you for all your support and encouragement thus far, we can’t wait to see what will be built from this experience. As the year goes on, follow our blog to learn about heart failure and design thinking, and track our journey towards a solution for improving heart failure care delivery.
