The United States has one of the most expensive healthcare systems in the world, and there is a tremendous need to improve outcomes and re-center the system on patients. Health for America (HFA) at MedStar Health was founded to inspire the best and brightest young professionals to work on this challenge through a unique fellowship program.
Since HFA’s inception in 2012, fellows have launched novel, scalable health solutions. Examples include a convenient, collapsible spacer to increase medication delivery for asthmatics; a smart scale built into a bathmat to eliminate the burden of monitoring on heart failure patients by automatically collecting, analyzing, and sharing weight trends; and a unique food delivery and education service tailored for type 2 diabetes needs.
HFA developed these ideas at the local level in communities ripe for innovation, where individuals have limited access to healthcare services. HFA was previously honored with the Dewey Winburne Community Service Award at South by Southwest®, which recognized the program’s work in bridging the digital divide and helping those less fortunate than others.
